A major route to postgraduate study in the United Kingdom has opened, but applicants should understand one important reality:
Chevening is not awarded solely to the candidate with the highest grades.

The programme searches for applicants who can demonstrate leadership, professional relationship-building, carefully researched course choices and a credible plan to create positive change after returning home.

Candidates from eligible countries and territories can apply for the 2027–2028 intake through the official Chevening application system. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

A standard Chevening Scholarship normally provides substantial financial assistance for one eligible UK master’s programme.

  • University tuition fees for the approved programme.
  • Economy travel to and from the scholar’s country of residence.
  • Monthly living allowance for accommodation and general expenses.
  • UK visa application cost for the scholar.
  • Arrival and departure allowances.
  • Travel top-up allowance where applicable.
  • Up to £75 toward required tuberculosis testing.
  • Access to Chevening’s academic, professional and international alumni network.

The stipend rate may depend on whether the scholar studies inside or outside London. Funding can differ for partner-funded, partial or specially structured awards. Applicants considering an MBA should examine the applicable tuition-fee cap.

Who Is Eligible?

Applicants must normally satisfy all of the following conditions:

  1. Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  2. Commit to returning to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship.
  3. Have at least 2,800 hours of eligible work experience obtained after completing undergraduate studies.
  4. Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies the applicant for admission to a UK master’s programme.
  5. Have completed undergraduate studies at least two years before the application deadline.
  6. Select three different eligible UK master’s courses.
  7. Obtain at least one unconditional university offer by the later offer deadline if the application progresses successfully.
Important 2026 clarification:
Chevening states that applicants who completed their undergraduate degree after October 2024 will not have had enough time to meet the current post-graduation work-experience requirement.

Understanding the 2,800-Hour Requirement

Chevening requires at least 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after completing the undergraduate degree. This is approximately equivalent to two years of full-time employment based on a 35-hour working week, although the experience may have been accumulated over a different period.

Simple calculation
Number of weeks × average weekly hours = total experience hours

The application system calculates the total using the dates and working hours entered by the applicant. Common mistakes include duplicating employment periods, entering unrealistic weekly hours and including experience obtained before undergraduate completion.
